Mini Biography:

Labeled the eternal romantic and with one of the best musical senses in the business, Yash Chopra is arguably India's most successful director of romantic films. Although he made action-oriented films like the ever-popular Deewaar (1975), it is in tackling love and its various aspects that he has been at his best. One of the few remaining commercial Indian directors who started their careers in the 1950s, he has successfully moved with the times from the socially significant Dhool Ka Phool (1959) to the young and cool Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).

Yash Chopra was born in Lahore in 1932, to an accountant in the PWD division of the British Punjab administration, the youngest of eight children. He began as an assistant director to I.S. Johar before working with his elder brother, the legendary B.R. Chopra; while another brother, Dharam Chopra, worked as his cameraman. He was given his first directorial opportunity with Dhool Ka Phool (1959), a melodrama about illegitimacy; it became a hit and even now remains popular today. Encouraged by this success, the Chopra brothers made a few more movies together, the most notable being Waqt (1965), India's first multi-starrer; and Ittefaq (1969), a thriller. On the personal front, Chopra married Pamela Chopra (née Singh) in 1970, and they had two children, Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra, both working in the film industry today.

In 1973, the Chopra brothers separated, with Yash Chopra founded his studio, Yash Raj Films, and launched it with Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), a successful melodrama about a polygamous man. He then entered one of his best phases with two Amitabh Bachchan classics: Deewaar (1975) and Kabhi Kabhie - Love Is Life (1976). These movies set the standard for the 1970s and 1980s, establishing Bachchan as the greatest and most beloved Indian film star of all time. His respective roles--a bitter criminal and a sensitive, brooding poet--are considered to be his greatest performances, although complete opposites of each other.

In the 1980s, Chopra went through a rough time. Two of his melodramas, Silsila (1981) and Faasle (1985); and two action-oriented films, Mashaal (1984) and Vijay (1988), flopped at the box office, although the latter became a critically acclaimed classic years later. However, he made a comeback with his musical love triangle Chandni (1989). The film was a huge success, with great performances by established heroine Sridevi and action hero Vinod Khanna. Then came what critics and Chopra himself considered his best film, Lamhe (1991), a beautiful film about cross-generational love. It couldn't survive the box office, however, due to its incestuous nature.

Parampara (1992), done for an outside producer, was a misfire, but then came the box-office hit and trend setter Darr (1993). Starring the then-débutant Shah Rukh Khan, it showed a sympathetic look at obsessive love and an emotion often overlooked in love--fear--and its success catapulted Khan to super-stardom. In 1995, Chopra turned to production and Aditya Chopra made his directorial debut with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which had the longest-running initial release in cinema history. He directed one more film, Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), a love story set against the theater, which became a huge success and a cult hit, before he retired from directing. However, in 2004, he made a grand comeback with Veer-Zaara (2004), a touching cross-border love story, which he said would be his last directorial effort.

The ages of the director and playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, his muse, proved you need to be young, as well as crazy, at heart, to be a true romantic....

Billa 2 sets a new record!!

Billa 2 is releasing this Friday and Mayajaal in Chennai has scheduled 76 shows which is a new record in the multiplex's history. The previous opening record was 75 shows, which was held by Ajith's earlier superhit Mankatha.

Another whopping stat is that 15000 online tickets were sold out in Mayajaal within half a day of the start of the booking. This indirectly means that all the 76 shows have been sold out for the opening day, which just reiterates the fact that Ajith is the King of Opening.

Other popular city multiplexes like Devi, Sangam, Abirami, Sangam, AGS, Fame and Inox are also seeing high demand for tickets. Cult single screens like Albert and Kasi are seeing similar scenes with respect to the advance booking. Looks like Billa 2's opening weekend is going to witness never before seen boxoffice returns.

Actress Sneha Back in action.

For Sneha who got married last week to Prasanna, it was back to work under the arc lights. No honeymoon for her, as she has to complete work for her Haridas, a film close to her heart. The film is directed by GNR Kumaravelan of Ninaithale Inikkum fame and has Kishore and Sneha in the lead with music by Vijay Antony.

Sneha is very happy with the role she plays in the film. The movie is about an eight-year-old boy’s view on life and his father. Sneha plays a pivotal role, which is crucial to the film. A couple of days of her shoot and the Haridas shoot will be over.

It is being made as a quickie as the shooting started only this year March and the film will be ready for release by July.

Remember that Sneha had opted out of Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiyaan for Haridas, as she was extremely excited upon hearing the script and accepted the role immediately. She had reportedly said that out of the 80 odd scripts she had heard, none had excited her more.

Thuppakki goes hi-tech

The shoot for Thuppakki, starring Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal is on full swing. AR Murugadoss is using everything that is only the best in the industry, starting from the lead actors to the technicians. The latest news is that the cce cinematographer Santosh Sivan, who recently joined the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers, is not using the usual 35 MM camera to shoot the film. It has been revealed that he is exploiting the latest ARRI digital technology that was introduced later last year. Even the Hollywood technicians, who are usually the first to introduce latest techs in the industry, have just started using this technology.

The makers have assured that the picture quality in this film will be something nobody has experienced yet. The film is expected to hit the screens during the last quarter of the year

Jyothika wants to act: Suriya

In a recent interview actor Suriya has revealed that his wife and former actress Jyothika still has the desire to get back to acting. He made it a point to clarify that it wasn’t his decision to keep her away from acting. But when quizzed him as to why she takes up only endorsements but not films, Suriya explains that shoot for endorsement lasts only for a couple of days and that she thinks she cannot afford spending long time in shooting spots without being there for her children. The Maatraan actor also said that his lady will come to act when she thinks that it is the appropriate time. Jyothika’s last release was Seetha Kalyanam in Malayalam.

Saguni’s audio launch will happen on May 11th, confirmed GV Prakash. The music director of this Karthi-starrer is upbeat over this development and says that there are some chartbusters in this mass entertainer that is sure to have Karthi’s fans go berserk. There are five songs in this album. They are: Kandha Kaara Vadai which has been rendered by Shankar Mahadevan and the lyrics has been penned by Paramu. Sonu Nigam and Saindhavi have crooned the song Manasellam Mazhaiye for which the lyricist is Na Muthukumar. Viveka has written the lyrics for Vella Bambaram and the vocals are by Baba Sehgal and Priya Himesh. Pottadhu Pathalai Maapillai will be a racy number which has been grooved by Annamalai Velmurugan and Pushpavanam Kuppusamy’s rendition Aatukkutti Muttaipodum Solliduvaanda has been penned by Na. Muthukumar.

The producers of Prince Pictures have made an official announcement about Singam 2. Following the tremendous success of ‘Singam’, the team is coming back together again for Singam 2. Produced at a budget of whooping amount, the film stars Suriya in lead role while Anushka Shetty and Hansika Motwani star opposite him in female lead characters.

The ensemble star-cast of Singam including Nasser, Vijayakumar, Vivek and Radharavi will be playing important roles in this film.

The shooting will commence once Suriya completes Maatraan and will be shot extensively in Chennai, Hyderabad, Tuticorin, Karaikkal and Tirunalveli. For the first time, Hari will be shooting some breathtaking action sequences in Africa and Kenya.

Director Gowtham Menon says Yohan will be like James Bond film

There is a great question in Kollywood that which director will get the call sheet of Vijay after Thuppakki. Now there is information that Vijay will be acting in Yohan directed by Gowtham Menon after completing Thuppakki.

Director Gowtham Menon while speaking about this film said, "Yohan script is ready. I will commence the shooting once Vijay completes Thuppaki directed by A R Murugadoss. Vijay will be the only Tamilian in this film.
The heroine will be an Indian. Rest of the actors and actresses will be foreigners. This is a Tamil film. This film will be of an International standard and will be released worldwide with English sub titles. A R Rahman is composing the music for this film. If I am able to establish the character Yohan, I will continue to make Chapter 1, 2 and 3 like James Bond films."

Aishwarya Rai and her family are very happy over the birth of their child. It seems that, Ash is enjoying the real life role of a mother. Finally, she is getting ready for her comeback in the film industry, that too in a south film.

 She while speaking to the media said, "Jananathan sir gave me the opportunity to act in Peranmai because I knew to speak Tamil. Seeing my role and acting in this film, Vasanthabalan sir gave me the opportunity in Aravaan.

I have proved that I can act in challenging roles. I can also act in glamour roles like other actresses. I have acted like that in the film Maanja Velu. I have done lots of home work for the film Aravaan. I took a lot of efforts for the village girl role since I hail from Chennai. I also had the problems with the Madurai dialect. I rectified this in the dubbing. I like competition. I got the name that I can do variety of roles. In Peranmai, I donned the role of a bold girl while in Maanja Velu I did a romantic role. In Aravaan, I donned the role of a village girl. Each role had a variety. So I can achieve in any role."

My mother Sarika appreciated my acting in 3! : Shruthi Haasan

Actor Kamal Haasan’s daughter and the heroine Shruthi Haasan of the recently released 3 said, " Apart from Tamil, I am also acting in other language films but my role and acting in the film 3 is being appreciated by everyone.

Whenever my films are released I will ask the opinion from 2 of my close friends and my parents. I will ask the opinion of my dad since he is an actor. I will be very happy when he says that he liked my acting very much.

He will not simply appreciate me because I am his daughter. He will not be biased in criticising me. His comment will be frank and straight forward. His comments have helped me in my growth. At any point of time, he will not advice me. He use to say that when we act in a role we should live that role and will also say not to compare with any other role.
This lesson was a guide to me in cinema and made me successful. My mother Sarika saw the Hindi version of 3. She appreciated me very much. Whenever I act in a film I will live that role. Even the crying scenes in 3, I did not cry for the sake of acting. I felt the pain of the role and cried really.

After 3 I am acting in the Telugu film which is the remake of the Hindi film Dabangg. Pawan Kalyan is the hero of the film. The shooting of this will be completed soon. This film gave me immense happiness. In whatever film I act, I will change myself according to the role.

Donning village girl was very challenging for me. I also did this with perfection. Right from my young age, I use to write poems. Very shortly I will be making a musical album using these poems. I like music very much. I learnt music systematically. I will compose music for films when time comes. I will also use my songs for my films."

Amala Paul is cheerful these days because of the success of the film Kadhalil Sodhapuvadhu Yeppadi in Tamil and Telugu languages. Amala Paul has been signed for the female lead role in a Telugu film which has Ram Charan in the lead role.

Though Amala Paul has been one of the leading actresses in Tamil and Telugu film industries, she was not signed for any big Malayalam film which is her mother tongue. Now that has been fulfilled. She has been signed to pair with Malayalam super star Mohanlal in the film titled Run Baby Run.
